English Language
01. Subject Introduction
• Language is more than a subject. It is the foundation of communication, critical thinking, innovation and global perspectives. The Department aims to cultivate a new generation with confidence, critical thinking and a global vision. Through systematic curriculum design and rich language contexts, students can connect with the world through English and become influential future leaders.
02. Department Philosophy
• The Department upholds ‘Perfectionists Lead. Be Leading Perfectionists’ as its core spirit, encouraging students to pursue excellence through self-disciplined learning, persistent effort and courageous reflection. We firmly believe that true excellence stems from solid accumulation, and we are committed to cultivating integrity and a sense of responsibility in our students.
03. Vision and Mission
• We are committed to building a centre of excellence for English education, nurturing lifelong learners with outstanding language proficiency, critical thinking, international perspectives and leadership qualities. Through innovative curricula and authentic language experiences, we build students’ confidence, competence and character, equipping them to meet the challenges of further studies and globalised careers.
04. Curriculum Framework
• Integrating the Hong Kong Education Bureau’s English curriculum with international education concepts, we construct a forward-looking school-based curriculum. The entire curriculum is built upon five core directions: Language Proficiency, Academic Excellence, Future Competencies, Character and Leadership, and Global Citizenship.
05. Graduate Attributes
• We expect students to become confident English communicators, proactive lifelong learners, passionate readers, critical thinkers, creative individuals, and global citizens with international perspectives.
06. Junior and Senior Secondary Curriculum
• The junior secondary stage focuses on building a solid English foundation, developing listening, speaking, reading, writing and collaborative skills through authentic contexts and diverse activities. The senior secondary stage focuses on the HKDSE and university academic English, deepening critical reading, analytical writing, public speaking and debate skills.
07. School-based English Excellence Framework
• Through curriculum innovation, differentiated instruction, personalised support and leadership development, we build a complete and coherent English learning system. Core components include the ‘Hillossary School-based Vocabulary Programme’, ‘Smart English Foundation Programme’, ‘English Enhancement Programme’ and ‘English Emporium’.
08. Signature Programmes
• Through authentic contexts and repeated application, we establish a complete vocabulary framework from S1 to S6; we strengthen grammar and reading comprehension for students with weaker foundations, and provide academic writing, debate and public speaking training for advanced students. The English Emporium fosters an English-rich campus culture.
09. Teaching, Learning and Assessment
• Teaching integrates language learning, critical thinking, creativity, leadership and digital skills. Assessment combines formative and summative approaches, providing specific feedback to help students identify strengths and weaknesses, build reflective skills and foster self-directed learning.
10. English Beyond the Classroom
• We create an immersive English campus environment where students can participate in activities such as English Emporium, Morning Assemblies, Reading Café, English Drama, Debate Forums, cultural celebrations and overseas exchanges. This allows them to integrate English into daily life and enjoy the pleasure of language learning.
11. Leadership, Innovation and Global Learning
• Through roles such as English Ambassadors and MC training, we cultivate students’ communication and leadership skills. We actively utilise AI and information technology to assist with pronunciation practice, writing revision and learning analytics, while using overseas exchanges to connect English with global issues.
12. Our English Community
• The Department brings together experienced English teachers, NETs and parents to co-construct a student-centred English curriculum. Students are encouraged to actively participate in recitation, speeches, drama and reading challenges, making every achievement a testament to the pursuit of excellence.
13. Closing Message
• We firmly believe that language can broaden horizons, connect the world and change lives. Our mission is not only to help students achieve excellent results, but also to nurture a new generation with confidence, wisdom, character and global perspectives, jointly practising the belief of ‘Perfectionists Lead. Be Leading Perfectionists’.
