一、What is the A-Level Programme

The A-Level (Advanced Level) qualification is traditionally regarded as the “gold standard” of post-16 education in many countries, particularly those with historical ties to the UK, where the examinations originated. Although A-Levels are a British curriculum designed for students aged 16 and above, they are offered by numerous schools worldwide and are widely recognized as a pathway to higher education institutions in the UK and across the globe.
Students on the A-Level programme typically study 3 to 4 subjects over a two-year period. Universities generally require at least three A-Level subjects for admission, and the vast majority of students opt to take three. Unlike the IBDP, the A-Level curriculum has no compulsory subjects or fixed subject combinations. Students tend to specialize in specific areas or study related disciplines, such as the Humanities (e.g., History, Geography, Economics) or the Sciences (e.g., Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry).
The combination of subjects chosen usually depends on the students’ interests or their intended field of university study. For instance, Mathematics and Physics are common A-Level choices for students planning to pursue Engineering at university. In contrast, admissions for Humanities degrees often have fewer strict prerequisites regarding A-Level subjects.

三、How to Choose Subjects

The syllabus, curriculum, and examinations of this educational system are designed and administered by five major UK examination boards: Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR), Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA), Learning Resource Network (LRN), and Edexcel. The authority and credibility of these boards are widely recognized internationally.

To date, over 5,000 educational institutions worldwide offer the British high school curriculum, with millions of students sitting for the standardized exams organized by these boards every year. Due to the scientific rigor and authoritative nature of the programme, Singapore has even adopted these examinations as its national university entrance exam, while Hong Kong has also introduced the curriculum as a standard for university admissions. In China, A-Level centres typically offer subjects such as Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Economics for students to choose from.

Deciding which subjects to choose is a common concern for both students and parents, yet it remains a challenging question to answer. English-speaking countries like the UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore do not have a single, unified university admission standard. Although they all recognize A-Level qualifications, individual universities and specific programmes often have varying requirements regarding which A-Level subjects students must take and the grades they need to achieve. Therefore, there is no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to subject selection.
When choosing subjects, students should generally consider their current academic strengths and their future goals—specifically, which universities and majors they aim to pursue—and then select courses that are strategically aligned with those requirements. However, making such decisions can be incredibly difficult for 16 to 18-year-olds, as they may not yet have a clear direction in mind. Therefore, it is advisable to choose subjects that are suitable for a wide range of universities and programmes, leaving plenty of room for flexibility in their future development.
Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Physics are A-Level subjects required by most universities and programmes during admissions (with the exception of highly specialized disciplines like Law), so it is recommended to choose these three. Beyond being widely accepted, students can also gain other benefits. Compared to their Western counterparts, Chinese students typically undergo more rigorous training in mathematics and sciences, giving them a solid foundation. Additionally, studying these subjects places relatively lower demands on English proficiency compared to other disciplines. Therefore, this combination effectively highlights the strengths of Chinese students.
However, if students already have a clear idea of their future major, they must choose their subjects with great care, as certain programmes have specific prerequisites. For instance, those planning to study Medicine will need to take Chemistry and Biology now.
