Volunteer Service

The Secondary 5 students of St. Hilary’s School joined forces with students from Hong Kong Chinese Women’s Association Secondary School, VNSAA St. Hilary School and Yuen Long Merchants Association Secondary School to form an inter-school youth volunteer team. Together, they visited an elderly service centre operated by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. The volunteer service aimed to promote respect and care for the elderly, while encouraging students to learn to care for senior members of the community through meaningful action.

On the day of the visit, the volunteers carefully planned a variety of interactive activities, including group-based quizzes with the elderly. Students took the initiative to sit alongside the elderly, patiently listening to their stories of life in the past and the wisdom they had gained over the years. The enthusiasm of the students brought smiles and laughter to the elderly, creating a warm and lively atmosphere.

Our students built particularly strong connections with the service recipients. They assisted the elderly in participating in the activities and demonstrated care and respect throughout the visit. The elderly participants praised the students for their courtesy and compassion. Meanwhile, the students shared that seeing the smiles on the faces of the elderly gave them a great sense of fulfilment and helped them gain a deeper understanding of the meaning behind the saying, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Amid laughter and joyful conversations, everyone shared a meaningful and memorable morning together.

This inter-school collaboration not only provided students with an opportunity to put service learning into practice, but also strengthened friendship and collaboration among the participating schools. We look forward to joining hands again in the future to spread warmth and care to more people in need.
